How to Style & Set Up Your Outdoor Table
How to Set Up and Style Your Outdoor Table Like a Pro
A great table is the start — placing and styling it well is what turns a patio into a space people gather in. Here’s how to set it up so it’s steady, inviting, and ready to host.
Step 1: Place it on level ground
Set the table on the flattest spot you have. On uneven patios or grass, use furniture levelers or felt pads under the legs to stop the wobble. A steady table is the difference between a relaxed meal and a spilled drink.
Step 2: Plan for shade and flow
- Position it where you’ll get shade at the times you use it, or add an umbrella.
- Leave about 90cm around the table to pull out chairs and walk past.
- Keep it close enough to the kitchen or grill for easy serving.
Step 3: Style with weatherproof pieces
- Use outdoor-rated placemats, runners, and cushions that resist fading.
- Add a centerpiece — a potted plant, lantern, or simple bowl.
- Stick to a colour palette that matches your chairs and planters.
Step 4: Light it for the evening
Outdoor lighting transforms a table after dark. String lights overhead, a lantern or LED candles on the surface, and solar path lights nearby make evenings warm and usable well past sunset.
Step 5: Keep it host-ready
Store cushions and table linens in a deck box so they’re dry and ready, and give the table a quick wipe before guests arrive. A table that’s always ready is one you’ll actually use.
